The Terra Foundation for American Art is committed to supporting academic and public programs that promote an international dialogue on American art and that foster the formulation and exchange of new ideas. Since its inception in 1978, the foundation has funded lectures, symposia, and scholarly publications and texts. It has also offered residencies, fellowships, and travel grants. Fellowships, Residencies, and Travel Grants The foundation funds and administers fellowships, residencies, and travel grants that provide opportunities for individual development. Over the years, the foundation has awarded pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and senior scholar fellowships to individuals whose projects have enriched the field of American art scholarship. Terra Summer Residency

The Terra Summer Residency in Giverny provides the opportunity to pursue individual study and research in a community of peers while being mentored by senior artists and scholars. Ten residential fellowships are awarded to artists and scholars from the United States and Europe. Fellowships are awarded to artists who have completed their studies at the Masters level and pre-doctoral students at an advanced stage of research and writing on American art or transatlantic artistic exchange. Each candidate must be nominated by their academic department. Terra Summer Residency fellows are awarded a stipend of $5,000 and artists receive an additional $200 for the purchase of materials. Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants 2009

The Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants support travel to the United States for research purposes. Foreign nationals of all European countries whose research projects concern American art or transatlantic artistic relations prior to 1980 are eligible. Three pre-doctoral grants of $5,000 and three post-doctoral grants of $7,500 (for researchers who have been awarded their doctorate within the past ten years) are available. Applications must be received by one of the partnering institutions:
the Courtauld Institute of Art, London,
the Institut National de l’Histoire de l’Art, Paris, or
the John F. Kennedy Institut für Nordamerikastudien, Freie Universität, Berlin.
Symposia Terra-supported symposia, colloquia, and panel discussions create local, national, and international forums for the exchange of ideas and points of view. Partners of the foundation for such programs have included the Art Institute of Chicago, the Association of Historians of American Art, the Musée du Louvre, and the Musée d’Orsay. Publications The foundation funds scholarly publications related to symposia and to exhibitions in order to document and disseminate new research and perspectives on American art.
Online Collection The foundation’s online collection provides images and information useful to scholars, including provenance, published references, and select interpretative text.
